Constrained design – is freedom a bad thing?

As a software developer I often think about “free design” versus “constrained design” since you, as a software devloper, often have the possibility to design quite freely. What I mean by free versus constrained is basically how many parameters that are locked  – either by you or someone else – and cannot be changed.

In the life of a software developer the parameters can include which operating system to use, which programming language to use, if the application should have graphical or text based user interface, etc. And in these days if the application should be a stand alone or web browser based application. Choices, choices, choices!

This is a subject I probably will write quite a lot about in this blog and not just in software design and development but in many other areas as well.
